Not all animals age:

Why Should You?

DNA isn’t everything ...not even to Evolution.   All of the great apes share around 99 percent of the same DNA, yet each is very different.  Humans can talk, and so can some birds.  Other apes cannot.  Why?

The magic of evolution is in the microbiome.  Humans have hundreds and hundreds of species of bacteria in their gut microbiomes.  Great apes have dozens and dozens.  What gives?

A two-year-old dog can have puppies.   The job of a two-year-old human is to organize their microbiome and to train their immune system.  Why is this so important?

When they are being born, the mother sends a love letter to her child with instructions on how they could grow up …and even how they will grow older.   Early on, We can know how they will age.

The microbiome is in charge of everything!  The magic of being human lies in the species of beneficial bacteria that they acquire both from their mother and from their environment during the first four critical years.

Evolution enables us to train bacteria to become small chemical factories.  In return for food and shelter, gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters, chemical precursors, and other functional molecules for the corporate body.  The precise combination of bacteria enables the production of molecules, including the neurotransmitters that facilitate speech.  Birds can speak, while gorillas cannot.

What concerns us here …is that otherwise beneficial bacteria cause aging.  They have been identified.  The mechanism of aging damage is known, solutions are here, now.   More and better solutions are on the horizon.

Hypothesis of Aging: Simple animals do not age.  Bacteria continue to divide into identical daughter cells forever. Therefore, a wearing-out or pre-programmed cell death is not a likely cause of aging.   Only evolved animals experience the phenomenon that we call aging.  Only very advanced animals, such as humans, develop advanced symptoms of decline, including sarcopenia, collagen loss in joints, and sagging skin.

Old humans have hundreds of trillions of gut bacteria, not counting the hundreds of trillions that escape annually in the stools.  This increase in bacteria closely corresponds to an overall bodily loss of amino acids. No wonder old humans often appear to be starving, yet they can often experience weight gain.  This is because bacteria do not consume fatty acids.  Gut bacteria utilize amino acids and will leave fat to accumulate where it is absorbed.  This is good evidence of the actual cause of aging.

There may only be one conclusion: Human aging becomes a tipping point of amino acid intake, where the balance is disrupted between supporting cellular repair, hormone, and peptide production on the human side ...and enabling the explosive and exponential growth of specific gut bacteria.  In human aging, specific gut bacteria become parasitic, triggering this process which continues over time.

The Answer is Simple

...hard to believe just how simple

Madam Calment lived for 122 years. Her nightly habit was to enjoy a long, several-hour supper, during which she would drink an entire bottle of Port wine. The theory is that the alcohol would combine with the alcohol soluble amino acids from her partially digested protein meal, allowing the amino acids to be absorbed through the stomach and not continue to the colon, where rogue gut bacteria could consume it.

Exercise has long been considered suitable for longevity.   M. Calment walked and rode her bicycle daily.  This is critical for longevity.  The workings of the lymph system explain this.

The human lymph system differs from those of all other animals.  It consists of 400 lymph nodes.  The lymph fluid shuttles amino acids from the gut to the lymph nodes. Unlike the heart, which circulates glucose and oxygen throughout the body via the blood, there is no pump for lymph.  The lymph moves fatty acids and amino acids in the lymph fluid by muscle movement only.  If amino acids do not circulate, they stay in the gut to be consumed by parasitic gut bacteria.   The fatty acids are not needed by bacteria and are left to be absorbed locally. This explains the loss of protein in older adults and the tendency to gain weight in the center of the body.

Over ten years ago, an oral dietary supplement was developed that mimics Madam Calment’s diet … just on a grander scale.  The alcohol intoxication was removed.  However, it serves the same function in the human digestive system. It is also approximately one hundred times more concentrated.  Clinical trials over the past decade have been satisfactory.  The lack of aging is noticeable in trial participants, and their health remains stable if not improved.

There is still much more that can be done to reduce the effects of aging on humans.  For example, Greenland sharks can live active lives of 400 years, and Arctic whales can live for over 200 years. The biological mechanisms to achieve an extended healthspan are within our reach. The new technology we have developed based on these long-living species can be applied to enhance human longevity.

Aquatic animals boast some of the longest lifespans on the planet.  Much of what they accomplish in longevity can be applied to humans.

This topic will be discussed in Part 3 of the Hypothesis of Aging.
